In August, 81% of Ukrainians had negative attitude to Russians and 52% to Belarusians, according to the sociology survey "Identity. Patriotism. Values" which was conducted on August 17-18 by the Rating Sociological Group.
The press release on the results of the poll published on Wednesday says that in April 2022 some 69% of respondents had negative attitude to Russians and 33% to Belarusians. In April 2021, these indices were 41% and 4%, respectively.
Today, 81% of respondents are negative about Russians, 14% – neutral, and only 3% are positive about them. Some 52% are negative about Belarusians, 34% – neutral, and 10% – positive.
Attitude to the Russians who live in Ukraine is mostly neutral – 42%. Some 22% of respondents are positive about them and 29% are negative.
Attitude to Ukrainians speaking Russian is mostly positive (51%) or neutral (31%). Only 14% have negative attitude to them.
In general, attitude to Russian-speaking Ukrainians improved as a result of the war from 37% as of April 2021 to 51% as of August 2022, although the level of positive attitude slightly downed to neutral in the past four months while the level of negative attitude did not change.
Also, attitude to residents of temporarily occupied Crimea and especially residents of the so-called "L/DPR" continues to worsen. Some 22% of respondents said they are positive about residents of occupied Crimea, 23% are negative and 45% are neutral (in April, 41% were positive, 14% were negative, and 40% were neutral). Some 14% of respondents are positive about "L/DPR" residents, 47% are negative, and 32% are neutral (in April 2022, some 27% were positive, 31% were negative, and 37% were neutral).
According to the survey, there is a "mitigation" in the evaluation of the time needed for reconciliation of Ukrainians with Russians. In April 2022 (the poll was conducted after the liberation of Kyiv region from the Russian invaders), two thirds said that reconciliation is impossible. However, in August this number decreased to about a half.
One third of respondents said that it could be possible to restore relations in 20-30 years, 14% – in 10-15 years, and only 5% said it is possibly in a few years. Older respondents, residents of eastern and southern regions, and Russian-speaking people are more inclined to believe in sooner reconciliation.
The poll was conducted using the CATI method (telephone interviews using a computer) among 1,000 respondents aged 18 and over in all regions, except for the temporarily occupied territories of Crimea and Donbas and territories where there is no Ukrainian mobile communication. The sample is representative in terms of age, gender, and type of settlement. Results are weighted using up-to-date data from the State Statistics Service. The error of the representativeness of the study with a confidence probability of 0.95, namely no more than 3.1%.
