Ukrainian Prosecutor General hopes to expand JIT to investigate Russia’s crimes
KYIV. Sept 6 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin expects that in October, at a meeting of participants of the Joint Investigative Group (JIT) to investigate crimes of the Russian Federation, among the issues of improving the effectiveness of joint work, there will be talk about expanding the list of countries included in the JIT.
"I welcome the interest of attracting more countries to this format (JIT). I am convinced that the JIT members at the meeting in October will allow us to discuss this. As well as other topics that will improve the effectiveness of our efforts in a detailed format," Kostin said, speaking at the opening of the Russian Warcrimes exhibition in Brussels on Monday.
According to him, the participation of the International Criminal Court in the investigation of war crimes is of great importance at the national and international levels.
"We see the ICC as the main supporter of justice at the international level. Prosecutor Khan has already been to Ukraine three times, and his team worked directly at the crime scenes. So they have a clear understanding of the situation. We have a fairly effective agenda for working together. I hope that in the near future the results of our work will bring results," the Prosecutor General stressed.
The Prosecutor General assured that Ukraine would make maximum efforts for the effective work of the ICC.
As for the crimes of aggression, the Prosecutor General noted that the ICC cannot investigate this category of crimes. "But we can’t let this go unpunished. Therefore, the creation of a special international tribunal to investigate and bring to justice for crimes of aggression is the main task for Ukraine," Kostin stressed.
He expressed his conviction that the consensus of the world community on this issue will give a powerful signal that these crimes will not remain unexplained.
The Prosecutor General also called the confiscation of assets for the restoration of Ukraine after the end of the war a logical and adequate measure of influence on the aggressor country.
