Ukrainian President's rep office in Crimea condemns organization of elections to State Duma in occupied territory
KYIV. Sept 17 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The Ukrainian President’s Representative Office in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea condemns the organization by Russia of elections to the State Duma in the temporarily occupied territory of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol, as well as the so-called "local elections" in the temporarily occupied Sevastopol, which are held on September17-19.
The relevant statement of the representative office was published on Facebook on Friday.
"The holding by Russia on the temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine ‘elections’ to its own legislative agencies is illegal and violates the norms and principles of international law," the office said.
It notes that the representative office, along with the law enforcement agencies of Ukraine, monitor and respond to all cases of participation in the organization and conduct of illegal "elections" to the State Duma of Russia in the temporarily occupied territory of the peninsula, in particular, the so-called "international observers" and "election commissions."
It is clarified that their actions will be given a legal assessment by the competent authorities, and in some cases the representative office will submit proposals on the application of personal special economic and other restrictive measures (sanctions) against persons involved in the conduct of elections, including the relevant issue will be raised within the mechanisms of Crimea platform.
"We call on the citizens of Ukraine and foreigners to abandon the idea of participating in and facilitate the organization of such illegal actions of the occupying state, and refrain from taking actions to the detriment of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. We call on the international community to resolutely respond to the illegal organization of ‘elections’ in the temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine and to strengthen measures of political and diplomatic pressure on Russia, as well as to prevent recognition of the status of a deputy of the State Duma of Russia for persons ‘elected’ in the temporarily occupied Crimea and to exclude the participation of such persons on international platforms as ‘representatives of Crimea," the office said.
They also demand from Russia to stop all illegal actions concerning the temporarily occupied territory of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol, in particular, the violation of the rights and freedoms of Ukrainian citizens on the peninsula.
