Ukrainian ombudsman arrives in Georgia to meet with Saakashvili

KYIV. Nov 15 (Interfax) – Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada Human Rights Commissioner Lyudmyla Denisova has arrived in Georgia and is planning to visit former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili in jail on Tuesday.

"Have arrived in Georgia to visit Ukrainian citizen and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Ukrainian presidential National Reform Council Mikheil Saakashvili at penitentiary institution No. 18 in the community of Gldani," Denisova said on Telegram on Monday.

Denisova said she received a letter from Saakashvili last week, in which he informed her of his deteriorating health and inappropriate prison conditions and asked her for a meeting.

"The Ukrainian embassy to Georgia has sent a request to the Georgian Justice Ministry to permit me to visit Mikheil at penitentiary institution No. 18 on November 16, 2021. Expecting a decision!" she said.

Saakashvili secretly arrived in Georgia on September 29 and was detained in Tbilisi on October 1 and placed in jail in the city of Rustavi soon afterward, where he declared a hunger strike. On November 8, he was transferred from the Rustavi prison to the prison infirmary in Tbilisi’s Gldani district without his relatives and lawyers being notified.

Saakashvili has been convicted in Georgia in absentia in several criminal cases and is being treated as a suspect in some others. The Georgian authorities warned repeatedly that he would be detained immediately after he crossed the border. He has described his detention as unlawful and the charges brought against him as falsified.
