Ukrainian FM urges EU ministers to increase supply of weapons, artillery shells to Ukraine
KYIV. March 20 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba during his participation in the meeting of the Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Member States of the European Union and called for increased military support for Ukraine for effective defense and counteroffensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
“The top priority need is artillery ammunition. It is not only about quantity, but also about the speed of supply. The sooner we get as many shells as possible, the more lives will be saved,” the MAF press service said, citing Kuleba.
The minister welcomed the initiative of the European colleagues to increase the European Peace Facility by extra EUR 2 billion to finance the purchase of weapons and ammunition for Ukraine and replenish the stockpiles of partners.
He expressed his gratitude to his European colleague Josep Borrell and to all EU member states for the proposal to jointly purchase ammunition based on the Estonian initiative.
“Ukraine welcomes the initiative to conclude an agreement on the joint purchase of ammunition between a number of European states and the European Defence Agency. We count on its speedy implementation and prompt delivery of ammunition for the Armed Forces of Ukraine,” the minister said.
Kuleba also called for the prompt provision of additional air defense systems, tank shells, anti-tank systems, long-range, high-precision weapons and other equipment to Ukraine.
“I urge to strengthen the relevant programs so that at least ten battalions of the Ukrainian military are constantly in the process of training,” the minister said.
The head of the Foreign Ministry made a special emphasis on the importance of system repair and production of weapons. He also said the Russian offensive will sooner or later lose its potential, so it is important right now to provide the Ukrainian defenders with the ceiling number of weapons and shells.
