Ukrainian FM: In relations with China, Ukraine will act as European state, part of Western political space
KYIV. Oct 4 (Interfax-Ukraine) – In relations with China, Ukraine will act as a European state and part of the Western political space, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba has said.
"China is the number one trade partner. We need to develop relations and make friends with China, including for deterring Russia. But in relations with China, Ukraine will act as a European state and part of the Western political space," Kuleba said in an exclusive interview with Interfax-Ukraine.
When asked whether the United States representatives warned Ukraine about relations with China, Kuleba replied in the negative.
"No. The United States has two "red lines," as it is fashionable these days to say. This is China’s access to military technologies and the spread of Chinese technologies in the field of 5G, cybersecurity in general. If you start playing with China in these two topics, you will immediately get very clear and straightforward signals from the United States. Look at the volume of trade between China and the United States. When I read on Facebook or in the news all these horror stories about Ukraine’s turning around to China or that Ukraine will learn from China how to run a state, that we are all betrayed, this is written either by people who are simply devoid of common sense, or by people who, under a contract, have to work out the dissemination of this agenda," the minister said.
He said that he feels an increase in China’s interest in Ukraine.
"I think that the Chinese generally have a certain passion for Ukraine, because they are simply interested in what kind of country it is, in which they have not yet been able to achieve what they have achieved in other countries," Kuleba said.
He said that Ukraine would be happy to make the visit of the President of Ukraine to China and would also be glad to receive President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping in Ukraine.
"It is also very important to understand that Russia is China’s ally. Accordingly, one cannot fight China and at the same time in one way or another not engage in deterring Russia and fighting against it," the foreign minister said.
