Ukrainian ferrous scrap procurement down 76% in 2022, further reduction expected in 2023 – association

KYIV. Dec 19 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Ukrainian scrap yards reduced ferrous scrap metal procurement 76% in 2022 to 996,700 tonnes from 4.136 million tonnes in 2021, Ukrainian media said, quoting the Ukrainian Association of Secondary Metals or UAVtormet.

UAVtormet said on Telegram that scrap exports fell 91.3% from 615,700 tonnes to 53,600 tonnes. Imports fell from 23,000 tonnes to 1,800 tonnes.

Scrap supply to the country’s steel mills fell 73% to 895,700 tonnes from 3.323 million tonnes.

Scrap metal stocks at steel plants were estimated at 10,000-15,000 tonnes as of January 1, 2023.

UAVtormet forecast scrap procurement will fall this year compared with last, to 900,000-950,000 tonnes. Supply to steel mills will fall to 800,000-820,000 tonnes and exports to 50,000-80,000 tonnes.
