Ukrainian business to be able to buy electricity cheaper in EU – Market Operator

KYIV. Nov 28 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Ukrainian business will be able to buy electricity cheaper on the European energy market after the launch of the market coupling mechanism with the EU, acting General Director of JSC Market Operator Oleksandr Havva said on his column in Economic Pravda.

"If we analyze the price situation on the day-ahead market [DAM] in October in Slovakia and Romania, with which we have a common cross-section, then in 50 hours the price there was lower by 16%, and sometimes the price reduction was more than 40% than on the DAM of Ukraine," Havva wrote.

According to him, Ukrainian business could take advantage of such market conditions and buy cheaper electricity or export it if the price situation in the country favors it.

"For this, it is very important for Ukraine to launch market coupling with the EU," the head of Market Operator stressed.

According to him, in general, electricity prices in neighboring European countries fell by more than 40% in October.

As reported with reference to Havva, Ukraine has a chance to join the unified spot market of Europe as a contracting party of the Energy Community and launch market coupling in test mode in the second quarter of 2023.
