Ukraine's reforms are one of most effective ways to defend against Russian aggression – Kvien
KYIV. Sept 24 (Interfax-Ukraine) – U.S. Charge d’Affaires in Ukraine Kristina Kvien said that one of the most effective ways for Ukraine to defend itself against Russian aggression is progress in implementing key reforms and overcoming corruption.
"Ukraine has made progress in building institutions based on integrity, it should not be overlooked. The country has created mechanisms to increase the accountability of public officials through the asset declaration system, developed a transparent public procurement process and established independent anti-corruption institutions," Kvien said in an address to the participants of the first youth meeting of the West-East, North-South Kyiv Security Forum, founded by the Open Ukraine Arseniy Yatsenyuk Foundation, its press service said on Friday.
However, Kvien said that some reforms in Ukraine are under threat and Ukrainians should insist on changes in these issues. "This summer, for example, the [Verkhovna] Rada passed and President Zelensky signed the law on reform of the High Council of Justice, that met the achievement. The Ukrainian government, civil society, and Ukraine’s international partners strongly support moving forward "in this critically important step of reforming Ukraine’s judiciary."
According to Kvien, the United States will continue to work to bring Russia to justice for its aggression against Ukraine. "We must clear assess the challenges that Ukraine faces both inside and outside of the borders […]. We have made this clear further aggression from Russia will have cause and consequences for it, and it must be accountable for that," she said.
