Ukraine's grain deliveries through seaports ensure food security of starving African countries – Agrarian Ministry

KYIV. Aug 16 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Ukraine’s export of agricultural products through its Black Sea ports, launched as part of the Istanbul grain agreements, allows food to be provided to the starving countries of East Africa.

So, on August 16, the bulk carrier Brave Commander (under the flag of Liberia) with 23,000 tonnes of wheat, chartered by the UN World Food Program (WFP), set off for Ethiopia from the Ukrainian port of Pivdenny, according to the website of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food.

The agency emphasized that in the first half of 2022, WFP purchased about 60,000 tonnes of wheat and 36,500 tonnes of peas from Ukraine to support global food security.

"According to the results of recent years, Ukraine has maintained leadership within the WFP in terms of food supplies for humanitarian operations. In general, in 2021, Ukraine sent 20% of food from UN programs. The share of Ukraine was more than Turkey and Russia combined," the website of the ministry states.

It noted that 17 vessels with 475,000 tonnes of agricultural products on board have already departed from Ukrainian ports as part of the implementation of the initiative for the safe transportation of agricultural products.
