Ukraine urgently needs more artillery systems and ammunition, air defense and coastal defense – Austin
KYIV. Sept 8 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Ukraine urgently needs more artillery systems and ammunition, air defense and coastal defense, U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said.
Austin said at a press conference following the results of the 5th meeting of the Contact Group on the Defense of Ukraine at Ramstein Air Base in Germany on Thursday that they had good talks today about priorities in Ukraine’s self-defense. He added that right now, Ukraine urgently needs more artillery systems and ammunition, air defense, coastal defense and other critical important capabilities.
He stressed that the defenders of Ukraine immediately and effectively used the military assistance that was sent to them.
Austin said that they would not stop their support for Ukraine’s self-defense either today or tomorrow. He said that the countries represented there today had shown their determination to support Ukraine’s sovereign right to defend itself, and they had also shown leadership in striving to integrate, train and produce to meet Ukraine’s security needs in the long term.
He noted that the contact group is even more united now and is determined to continue general support for Ukraine’s right to defend itself.
According to him, since the first meeting, the United States has increased military support to Ukraine by about 4 times.
Austin informed that in the next few weeks, in coordination with NATO, the United States will hold a special session of the contact group, which will bring together senior national weapons directors.
The minister said that they would discuss how the U.S. military-industrial base can best equip the Armed Forces of Ukraine with the necessary capabilities in the future.
