Ukraine to increase area under onions, carrots and other vegetables in 2023 – Vysotsky
KYIV. March 28 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Ukrainian farmers plan in 2023 to increase the area under onions, carrots and other vegetables, which will allow them to get a larger harvest than in 2022, Taras Vysotsky, the First Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food, said.
“The Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food is working to fill the market as much as possible and stabilize prices. This should be done not through regulation or restriction, but through market mechanisms. Because price regulation, as practice shows, is implemented in the shadow turnover,” the official said during the in United News telethon.
Speaking about the current prices for vegetables, Vysotsky noted that in spring the prices for vegetables are the highest, which is explained by the seasonal factor.
In addition, according to him, two more factors affected their cost.
“Firstly, the energy crisis created by the aggressor country prevented the preservation of a large part of the crop. Secondly, many vegetables, primarily onions and carrots, were grown in Kherson and Zaporizhia regions. Due to the occupation of these regions, vegetables were not available to the Ukrainian consumer,” Vysotsky said and expressed confidence that with the advent of a new crop, prices will decrease.
According to the State Statistics Service, prices for vegetables in Ukraine increased by 36.2% over the year by the beginning of March, for fruits – by 74.9%, while inflation was 24.9%.
