Ukraine to demand at UNGA creation of Intl Tribunal to investigate crime of Russian aggression – Dpty Justice Minister

KYIV. Sept 19 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The Ukrainian delegation to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) will demand from the international community the creation of an International Tribunal to investigate the crime of Russian aggression, as well as an International Compensation Mechanism for the losses that Russia has inflicted on Ukraine with its unprovoked war, Deputy Justice Minister Iryna Mudra said.

According to her, during the current high-level week of the UN General Assembly, which takes place with the participation of heads of state and diplomatic departments, and which considers the main initiatives of countries for the next year, as well as proclaims the main political statements, most of the planned events will be devoted to Ukraine, and also the consequences of a full-scale war that Russia has started.

"So, for example, today an event is planned for members of government delegations, which will discuss issues related to Russia’s gross violation of human rights and international humanitarian law in Ukraine, issues of the illegal detention of Ukrainians in filtration camps, deportation of Ukrainians to depressive regions of the Russian Federation, such as Siberia and the Far East," Mudra said on the air of the national TV marathon on Monday.

She noted that the aim of this event is to call on states to "take urgent measures aimed at condemning the actions of the Russian Federation, including the UN Human Rights Committee."

"Ukraine will demand real help to force Russia to release those who it illegally holds in filtration camps and those who were forced to leave their country and return them home," the deputy minister of justice said.

Mudra also said that the main event of the UN General Assembly, which is dedicated to holding the Russian Federation and its military and political leadership accountable, will be held on September 22.

"It will present Ukraine’s initiatives regarding the creation of an international special tribunal regarding the crime of aggression, and an international compensation mechanism for losses that Russia has inflicted by this unprovoked war. Information will also be provided regarding the investigation of crimes against humanity, crimes of genocide and war crimes both in Ukraine and in the International Criminal Court," the deputy minister said.

She added that Ukraine would demand the support of the United Nations for these initiatives, as well as "decisive actions aimed at establishing a tribunal and an international compensation mechanism."

"The moment has come when the UN must prove its determination and the purpose of its creation – the support of international peace and security, the prevention and elimination of threats to peace, as well as the suppression of acts of aggression and other violations of peace. We will demand from the UN the fulfillment of the goals of creating this Organization," Mudra summed up.
