Ukraine to become full member of Pompidou Group from Jan 3, 2022 – Monastyrsky

KYIV. Oct 28 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, together with the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, are ready to represent Ukraine in the activities of the Pompidou Group, both at the expert level and as a permanent correspondent, Interior Minister Denys Monastyrsky has said.

"I am pleased to say that cooperation between Ukraine and the Pompidou Group already has a previous success story. And from January 2022, Ukraine will become a full member of the organization. In this regard, a new active stage in the development of the national anti-drug policy will begin for our country, the opening of an interstate dialogue, exchange of best practices and effective cooperation," Monastyrsky said at the official celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Pompidou Group, the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs reported.

He stressed that in 2021, through the joint efforts of the state authorities of Ukraine, the Strategy of State Drug Policy until 2030 was developed, which retains all the important principles set forth in the previous Strategy, developed with the support of the Pompidou Group. Now the new Strategy is awaiting early approval and further implementation.

As reported, at the end of July 2021, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky signed the decision of the Ukrainian parliament on Ukraine’s accession to the Partial Agreement on the creation of a cooperation group to combat drug abuse and drug trafficking (Pompidou Group). In August 2021, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba sent a letter to Secretary General of the Council of Europe Marija Pejcinovic-Buric, in which he informed her about Ukraine’s decision to join the group.

The Council of Europe said that by joining the Pompidou Group, Ukraine will benefit from a renewed political and legal framework, which will support the Group in operating as a key international reference point for human rights in drug policies. Among other things, Ukraine as a new member State will gain hands-on international support on fighting drug trafficking through access to specialized law enforcement networks and professional cooperation platforms for the exchange of operational and policy information, experimenting with flexible responses to addressing 21st century addictions such as online gambling, and new insights from research and practice on science-based prevention and treatment of substance use disorders.
