Ukraine threshes first million tonnes of corn – Ministry of Agrarian Policy
KYIV. Sept 24 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Ukraine continues to harvest grain and leguminous crops, as of September 23, 1.1 million tonnes of corn were harvested (a rise of 0.69 million tonnes in the week starting on September 16 and ending on September 23) from 226,800 hectares (4% of planned areas), the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food said on the website on Friday.
According to the report, a total of 54.23 million tonnes (a rise of 2.89 million tonnes per week) of major grains, legumes, oilseeds were harvested this season, and sugar beets were dug from a total area of 13.89 million hectares.
According to the ministry, the harvesting of winter wheat, barley and peas has been completed as of that date; a total of 46.4 million tonnes from 10.6 million hectares have been harvested. A total of 33 million tonnes of winter wheat crops were threshed with a yield of 46.5 kg per ha, 10.2 million tonnes of winter barley (41.2 kg per ha), 0.58 million tonnes of winter peas (24 kg per ha). The harvesting of these spring crops has not yet begun.
The leaders in the threshing of grain and leguminous crops were Odesa region with an indicator of 4.36 million tonnes, as well as Kharkiv (3.66 million tonnes), Dnipropetrovsk (3.64 million tonnes), Mykolaiv (3.47 million tonnes), Zaporizhia (3.27 million tonnes), and Kherson (3.19 million) regions.
The Ministry of Agrarian Policy last week announced the completion of the harvesting of rapeseed: as of September 16 2.89 million tonnes were harvested from an area of 1.01 million hectares. However, according to data updated on September 23, farmers from several regions harvested another 15,000 tonnes of rapeseed, due to which the total yield of this crop in Ukraine increased to 2.91 million tonnes.
Also, farmers harvested 4.26 million tonnes of sunflower (a rise by 1.88 million tonnes per week) from 2 million hectares (31% of the planned area).
According to the Ministry of Agrarian Policy, agrarians from 12 regions have begun harvesting sugar beets, a total of 1.25 million tonnes (a rise by 0.75 million tonnes) have been harvested from 25,800 hectares (11% of the planned area).
The ministry said that the harvesting of buckwheat has been completed in six regions, a total of 75,000 tonnes (a rise by 12,000 tonnes) had been harvested from 55,500 hectares (two-thirds of the planned area), while the harvesting of millet has been completed in seven regions – 134,000 tonnes (a rise by 15,000 tonnes) from 56,900 hectares (73%).
In addition, 0.62 million tonnes of soybeans (a rise by 270,000 tonnes) were harvested from 262,880 hectares (21% of the forecast).
The ministry said that the average yield of corn as of September 23 was 4.862 tonnes per ha, sunflower – 2.125 tonnes per ha, soybeans – 2.35 tonnes per ha, rapeseed – 2.85 tonnes per ha, sugar beet – 48.5 tonnes per ha, buckwheat – 1.35 tonnes per ha, millet – 2.35 tonnes per ha.
