Ukraine should make more efforts to vaccinate older people – World Bank
KYIV. Sept 13 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Ukraine used the resources of the World Bank to purchase vaccines, but the rate of vaccination remains slow, and the rate of vaccination of the elderly lags behind even the national average, World Bank Vice President for Europe and Central Asia Anna Bjerde has said in an еxclusive interview with Interfax-Ukraine.
She said that the good news is that Ukraine has already used the World Bank resources to purchase the necessary vaccines. According to her, unfortunately, the vaccination process is not going well enough: Ukraine has one of the lowest vaccination rates in Europe.
As of September 10, only 14.3% of the population received at least one dose and only 11.5% are fully vaccinated.
She compared the data in neighboring countries: in Poland, 50% of the population is fully vaccinated, in Slovakia – 40%, in Turkey – 47%, even in neighboring Moldova – more than 21%. She added that more effort and attention is needed to reach older people (over 60 years old), whose vaccination rate lags behind the national average, while they are most vulnerable to severe COVID-19.
