Ukraine refuses from supply of AstraZeneca, Moderna vaccines, allows second booster dose

KYIV. Sept 19 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Ukraine has refused from the supplies of AstraZeneca and Moderna vaccines and allowed the second booster shot for all categories of the population, according to the Chief Sanitary Doctor of Ukraine Ihor Kuzin.

"Three vaccines are currently available in Ukraine: CoronaVac, Janssen and Comirnaty from Pfizer. We have refused from the supplies of AstraZeneca and Moderna vaccines according to the COVAX mechanism," he told a Monday press briefing.

Kuzin also said that around 5 million CoronaVac vaccines and around 30,000 doses of Janssen vaccine are available in Ukraine.

There had been a lack of Pfizer vaccines in the country in the recent few weeks due to problems with logistics, he said. The last 500,000 batch of this vaccine was delivered to Ukraine in July, Kuzin said, adding that the new supplies have been resumed last week. Ukraine received 400,000 doses of Pfizer vaccine, which will be delivered to regions by the end of the week.

It is expected that Ukraine will receive 1.8 million doses of Pfizer vaccine within the framework of the COVAX mechanism.

Kuzin also said that Ukraine receives vaccines only under the international COVAX mechanism for free. The contracts on its procurement from the manufacturer for public funds were terminated at the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion for the sake of saving the budget funds.

The Health Ministry has also allowed the second booster vaccination of the population, Kuzin said.
