Ukraine reduces export of scrap metal by 91% in 2022

KYIV. Jan 18 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Ukrainian enterprises in 2022 reduced the export of ferrous scrap by 91.3% compared to the previous year, to 53,557 tonnes.

According to statistics released by the State Customs Service (STS), in monetary terms, the export of scrap metal over this period decreased 92%, to $19.271 million.

At the same time, last year the country reduced the import of scrap metal in kind by 92%, to 1,824 tonnes. In monetary terms, the import of scrap fell by 92.3% to $3.488 million.

The import of scrap metal in 2022 was mainly from Turkey (78.92% of deliveries in monetary terms), the Russian Federation (13.25%) and Cyprus (5.08%); export was to Turkey (38.97%), Poland (34.25%) and Greece (10.12%).

In addition, Ukrainian steel enterprises in 2022 did not import products of direct reduction of iron from ore under code 7203 – hot briquetted iron (HBI), which is a substitute for pig iron and scrap metal. However, 258 tonnes of this product was exported to India (100%) for $48,000.
