Ukraine raises imports of agricultural products by 19% in nine months – Institute of Agrarian Economics

KYIV. Nov 8 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Ukraine in January-September of this year increased imports of agricultural products by 19% compared to the same period in 2020 – up to $5.7 billion, while the main suppliers were the EU countries, from which 52% of all imports of agricultural products were made – for $2.99 billion, according to the website of the National scientific center Institute of Agrarian Economics.

According to the report, the largest suppliers of agricultural products to Ukraine in the nine months of 2021 were Poland ($653 million), Germany ($423 million), Italy ($371 million), Turkey ($317 million), France ($273 million), the Netherlands ($241 million), Indonesia ($233 million), Norway ($201 million), the United States ($195 million) and Spain ($173 million), which accounted for about 54% of Ukrainian agricultural imports.

Imports of foreign fish and seafood for the first nine months of this year amounted to $574 million, fruits and berries (mainly bananas and citrus fruits) – $523 million, alcoholic beverages – $417 million, tobacco products – $401 million, oil seeds and fruits – $315 million, cocoa products and chocolate – $301 million, oils (mainly palm) – $264 million, dairy products (mainly cheeses) – $263 million. Together, these products make up 60% of the value of domestic imports of agricultural products.

"The commodity structure of imports of food products to Ukraine has remained unchanged for several years. At the same time, the tendency of an increase in the cost of purchases of all key imported goods remains," expert of the institute Bohdan Dukhnytsky said.

As reported, the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food predicts the export of cereals and legumes in the 2021/2022 marketing year at 56 million tonnes with a harvest of 75.8 million tonnes.
