Ukraine raises capitalization of state banks by UAH 222 bln since 2014 – NBU head

KYIV. Oct 4 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Ukraine has increased the additional capitalization of state-owned banks by UAH 222 billion since 2014, Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) Kyrylo Shevchenko has said.

"If we calculate today how much the state has invested in state-owned banks only since 2014, it will be UAH 222 billion. And given the fact that their additional capitalization requires depositing not in money, but in government bonds, we must add coupons paid by the Ministry of Finance to this amount," he said in an interview with the online portal LB.ua.

He added that since 2014, the government has received UAH 58 billion in dividends from state banks, of which UAH 55 billion was paid by PrivatBank, for the capitalization of which UAH 155 billion was spent.

The rest of the state-owned banks paid UAH 2.6 billion in dividends, which testifies to the ineffectiveness of the state as the owner of the banks, the head of the NBU said.
