Ukraine offers Europe additional transit of 55 billion cubic meters of gas at discount – NSDC secretary
KYIV. Oct 23 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Ukraine offers Europe additional transit of 55 billion cubic meters of gas under "special conditions", Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) Oleksiy Danilov has said.
"The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine together with NJSC Naftogaz Ukrainy and Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine LLC (GTSOU) will determine special conditions for transporting additional volumes of natural gas from the Ukrainian GTSOU to the EU countries in volumes of at least 55 billion cubic meters per year," he said.
Danilov recalled that the current contract with Gazprom envisages pumping 40 billion cubic meters of gas through the Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine to Europe, but the potential of the system allows transit of much larger volumes, especially during the current crisis period.
In turn, on Friday evening, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, in a comment transmitted to the Bloomberg agency said that additional transit capacity could be provided at a discount of up to 50% of the existing tariff in the contract between Naftogaz and Gazprom.
According to him, Kyiv expects practical negotiations with Berlin and Brussels to discuss this proposal, since quick coordinated actions can stop the current energy crisis in Europe.
"Ukraine, for its part, guarantees transit, special anti-crisis conditions for transit in excess of the agreed volumes," Zelensky said.
In addition, advisor to Minister of Energy Lana Zerkal said on her Facebook page that Ukraine is ready to get involved in solving the gas crisis in Europe, as well as to prove that the Kremlin’s statements about the allegedly expensive and unreliable transit through the Ukrainian gas transportation system have no grounds.
"We are demonstrating the capabilities of our gas transportation system, showing that we are ready to get involved in solving the gas crisis," she said.
