Ukraine notifies Switzerland of necessary procedures for return of Yanukovych's assets – FM
KYIV. Oct 28 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Ukraine has assured Switzerland that it is carrying out the necessary judicial procedures to return the assets of former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and his entourage to Ukraine, Federal Adviser, Vice President and Chairman of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs of the Swiss Confederation Ignazio Cassis has said.
"Indeed, now there is mutual assistance between Ukraine and Switzerland in the judicial sphere. We are talking about the amount of EUR 70 million – these funds belong to the Ukrainian people … Seven years have passed since that moment, and we have signaled for Ukraine that there are three years left, but we received a positive response that the necessary judicial procedures are taking place so that as soon as the legal situation in the judicial sphere of Ukraine changes, these funds are returned to Ukraine," Cassis said at a press conference in Kyiv on Thursday following the results of negotiations with Foreign Minister of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba.
Seven years ago, the Swiss Federal Council decided to freeze all assets of Yanukovych and his entourage in the country. The Swiss Embassy in Ukraine previously reported that since then, the Swiss authorities have been working closely with Ukrainian partners to complete the process of returning these assets to the Ukrainian people based on court decisions on their illegal origin. The embassy also recalled that, according to Swiss law, the maximum duration of such a freeze is ten years.
