Ukraine, NATO countries can restore security balance in Black Sea in close cooperation – Kuleba

KYIV. Oct 5 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba notes that the Russian occupation and militarization of Crimea destroyed the security situation and created obstacles to trade in the Black Sea, but close cooperation between Ukraine and NATO in the Black Sea region can restore the security balance, the press service of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has reported.

"The Russian occupation of Crimea destroyed not only the territorial integrity of Ukraine, but also the entire security situation in the Black Sea, dealt a blow to international law and order. Now we need a greater NATO presence in the Black Sea, as well as closer interaction between the Black Sea countries. Joint actions in close cooperation will restore the balance of security," Kuleba said, speaking at the Warsaw Security Forum on Tuesday.

The head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry expressed gratitude to the foreign ministers of Turkey, Finland and Poland present at the panel discussion for the active participation of their countries in the creation of the Crimea platform, which is aimed, in particular, at overcoming the security challenges of the militarization of the temporarily occupied Crimea.

The minister added that Ukraine attaches priority importance to the restoration, strengthening and rearmament of the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

"The Black Sea has always been famous for sea trade. Now it is under threat due to the actions of the Russian Federation. Restoring the balance of security in the Black Sea is also necessary to protect trade," Kuleba said.

The head of Ukrainian diplomacy firmly rejected the principle of "not irritating Russia" when it comes to NATO’s policy in the Black Sea. According to him, Russia is annoyed by the very existence of the Alliance. "Russia will perceive any actions as a provocation. The only question is whether you are doing something or not. If you do nothing, Russia will do for you," the minister said.
