Ukraine intends to enter heating period with 19.2 bcm of gas – Energy Minister

KYIV. Oct 6 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The Ministry of Energy expects that gas stocks in underground storage facilities (UGS) in Ukraine at the beginning of the heating season will amount to 19.2 billion cubic meters (bcm), Minister of Energy Herman Haluschenko has said.

"We plan to start the heating period with 19.2 billion cubic meters," he said during a government meeting on Wednesday.

According to him, there are now about 19 billion cubic meters of gas in the underground storage facilities.

In addition, he said that today coal reserves at TPPs and CHPPs stay at 846,000 tonnes, which is significantly below the schedule.

"There is a lag behind the schedule, but coal is being imported, contracts have been signed, and everything will be balanced," Haluschenko said.

According to the calculations of Interfax-Ukraine, from the end of the gas withdrawal season from April 29 to October 5, 2021, the reserves in the Ukrainian UGS facilities grew by 23.4% (by 3.585 billion cubic meters), to 18.876 billion cubic meters (in fact – 18.7 billion cubic meters, since 0.176 billion cubic meters of gas is still on the balance of UTG in the Verhunske UGS located in the occupied territory).

At the same time, at the beginning of October, Ukraine suspended the injection of natural gas into its UGS facilities. So, if on October 1, pumping into the "underground" amounted to 13.94 million cubic meters, then on October 2 it dropped to 0.61 million cubic meters, and on October 3 fell to zero.

The average daily gas injection in May was 11.3 million cubic meters, 19.1 million cubic meters in June, 30.2 million cubic meters in July, 32.5 million cubic meters in August, and 23.4 million cubic meters in September.
