Ukraine imposes sanctions against Russian athletes Isinbayeva, Popov, Tarpishchev, Honorary President of Russia’s Olympic Committee Smirnov – Gutzeit
KYIV. Feb 27 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has imposed sanctions on Russian athletes Yelena Isinbayeva, Alexander Popov, Shamil Tarpishchev and Honorary President of the Russian Olympic Committee Vitaly Smirnov, Minister of Youth and Sports, President of the National Olympic Committee Vadym Gutzeit has said.
“Russian athlete, Olympic champion Yelena Isinbayeva. Russian swimmer Alexander Popov. The president of the Olympic Committee of the Russian Federation Vitaly Smirnov [honorary president]. Russian tennis player, coach, President of the Russian Tennis Federation Shamil Tarpishchev … Yesterday, on February 26, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a decree that applied personal sanctions lasting 50 years to these persons. A fair decision in the interests of the Ukrainian people and the Olympic family,” Gutzeit wrote on Facebook.
According to the minister, these persons are leaders of public opinion in Russia and members of the International Olympic Committee, and also publicly speak out in support of a full-scale invasion of Ukraine and are involved in pro-Russian propaganda.
As reported, on February 26, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy put into effect the decision of the National Security and Defense Council on the application of personal special economic and other restrictive measures (sanctions).
