Ukraine hopes to hold summit in Normandy format even under Chancellor Merkel – PM

KYIV. Sept 28 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Ukraine hopes to hold a summit in the Normandy format even under German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba has said.

"In fact, the most active work is now being carried out on the organization of the Normandy Summit, and we really want to hold it with the participation of Chancellor Merkel. When she came here, to Kyiv, on August 22, this was discussed. It was after her visit here. The active diplomatic work has started after her visit," Kuleba said on the Freedom of Speech (Svoboda Slova) television program on ICTV on Monday.

According to the Foreign Minister of Ukraine, a possible bilateral meeting of the presidents of Ukraine and Russia, Volodymyr Zelensky and Volodymyr Putin, "in no way cancels, does not suspend the Normandy format."

"Therefore, there is no need to present a possible bilateral meeting with Putin as some kind of departure from the Normandy format," he said.

The minister said the new coalition in the Bundestag will be balanced and favorable for Ukraine.

"Yesterday I received a message from Germany from one very knowledgeable person, a friend of Ukraine, who wrote to me that, thanks God, the worst scenario of the coalition for Ukraine has been reduced to practically zero. And now, whoever is at the head of the German government, the coalition [if no force majeure occurs] will be balanced and favorable for Ukraine one way or another," Kuleba said.
