Ukraine hopes to agree on 'all for all' prisoner swap, but it's a long process – Coordination HQ
KYIV. March 17 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Ukraine hopes to reach an agreement on a prisoner swap in the “all for all” format, however, a third party that could act as a mediator in the exchange procedure has not been determined yet, Spokesperson for the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Defense Ministry of Ukraine Andriy Yusov has said.
During a meeting with the families of the servicemen of the 23rd Maritime Border Guard Detachment of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, Yusov said that the parties were in parallel talks on several prisoner swaps, according to a statement on the Telegram channel of the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War on March 16.
The headquarters said that Ukraine still hopes to reach an agreement on a prisoner swap in the “all for all” format, however, this process takes a long time.
“So far we do not have a third party that would act as a mediator. The aggressor state’s consent is required to have it. We do not stop the work on this issue, but so far the swaps [are agreed during] bilateral talks,” Yusov said.
He also recalled that in line with the Geneva Conventions prisoners of war return when the hostilities are over.
“We do not wait and we have returned almost 2,000 people,” he said.
Yusov also said that the issues of treatment of Ukrainian prisoners of war are regularly discussed during the talks.
