Ukraine hits entire history record in early cereals harvest of 44.8 mln tonnes – ministry

KYIV. Sept 3 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Ukraine has completed harvesting early grains and legumes, the harvest amounted to 44.8 million tonnes from a total area of 10.2 million hectares, which was a record figure in the entire history of the country, the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food said on the website on Friday.

According to the ministry, 32.8 million tonnes of wheat, 10.94 million tonnes of barley, 2.8 million tonnes of rapeseed, and 0.57 million tonnes of peas were threshed. The largest yield of wheat was in Khmelnytsky region (6.52 tonnes per ha), barley – in Kyiv region (5.72 tonnes per ha), rapeseed – in Khmelnytsky region (3.5 tonnes per ha).

Odesa region became the leader in the harvest of early grain crops with an indicator of more than 4.1 million tonnes. Some 3 million tonnes of grain were threshed each in Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhia, Mykolaiv, Kharkiv and Kherson regions.

"Undoubtedly, the well-coordinated work of farmers, favorable soil and climatic conditions this year, as well as an expanded program of state support for the agricultural sector were of great importance for achieving such results," Minister of Agrarian Policy Roman Leschenko said.

According to him, in January-July 2021, farmers received UAH 546 million from the state budget under the program of partial compensation for the cost of domestic agricultural machinery and equipment, within the framework of the state program to reduce the cost of loans UAH 565 million was received, and under the Affordable Loans 5-7 -9% program more than UAH 26 billion was received.

"Taking into account the poor harvest on other continents, the situation with world prices is favorable for the agricultural products of Ukraine and enhances the role of the state in global food security. Accordingly, with such state support, the agricultural sector in 2021 can form more than half of the state’s foreign exchange earnings and provide a fifth of the country’s GDP," Leschenko said.
