Ukraine cuts imports of coking coal by 4.5%, raises scrap exports by 20 times in Jan-Aug

KYIV. Sept 16 (Interfax-Ukraine) – In January-August of this year, Ukrainian coke and chemical plants imported 6.14 million tonnes of run-of-mine coking coal and coal concentrate for coking, which is 4.5% less than in the same period last year.

According to an information note of the Ukrmetalurgprom association on Thursday, the supply of Ukrainian coal mined for this period amounted to 2.49 million tonnes – 8.3% more than in the same period last year.

In general, in January-August 2021, Ukrainian coke and chemical plants received 8.63 million tonnes of coal for coking, which is 1.1% less compared to January-August 2020. At the same time, the share of imported coal in the total supply amounted to 71.1% versus 73.7% in the same period a year earlier.

Some 5.634 million tonnes of coke (104% versus January-August 2020), including 5.388 million tonnes of Ukrainian origin (100.8%), and 246,000 tonnes of imported coke (3.42 times more), were supplied to Ukrainian metallurgical enterprises in the specified reporting period. The share of imported coke in the total supply amounted to 4.37% versus 1.33% in eight months of 2020.

In addition, in January-August of this year, 2.609 million tonnes of scrap metal (143.5% compared to the same period in 2020) were procured, of which 2.199 million tonnes (122.4%) were supplied to Ukrainian consumers as imported. Exports of scrap metal amounted to 410,000 tonnes (19.52 times more than in January-August 2020).

It is noted that the provision of metallurgical enterprises with Ukrainian iron ore raw materials for the specified period was carried out in accordance with the needs of metallurgical production. The iron ore was not imported. Iron ore exports in January-August 2021 amounted to 29.76 million tonnes (96.9% compared to the same period in 2020).

According to the updated data of Ukrmetalurgprom, over eight months of this year, enterprises produced 22.730 million tonnes of sinter (106.8% versus January-August 2020), 6.560 million tonnes of gross coke with 6% moisture content (101.6%), 14.481 million tonnes of cast iron (106.8%), 14.590 million tonnes of steel (106.6%), 13.012 million tonnes of rolled products (106%), and 660,000 tonnes of pipe products (121.6%)

As of September 15, 2021, of the main existing production facilities, 19 out of 21 blast furnaces, seven out of eight open-hearth furnaces, 14 out of 16 converters, five out of 15 electric furnaces and 16 out of 17 continuous casting machines are in operation.
