Ukraine can vaccinate over 70% of population against COVID-19 – WHO Representative in Ukraine
KYIV. Sept 17 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Ukraine can vaccinate more than 70% of the population against coronavirus (COVID-19) disease, World Health Organization (WHO) representative, Head of the WHO Country Office in Ukraine, Dr. Jarno Habicht has said.
During an exclusive interview with Interfax-Ukraine he expressed hope that it is really possible to vaccinate more than 70%. According to the polls in August, we now see that every second Ukrainian is interested in being vaccinated, he said.
Habicht stressed that the most important thing is that we need to vaccinate the elderly and those at risk.
According to him, the main critical issue is helping people who may have a severe course of the disease and even die in intensive care units. Therefore, we should not chase indicators now, but should target certain groups of the population.
According to Habicht, in the 36 countries that provided the WHO with information on the age of the vaccinated, in the group over 60, more than 70% are vaccinated.
He said that it is very important to use this approach and focus specifically on the elderly, who have high risks. I hope that in the coming months, this is exactly what Ukraine will do, Habicht said.
Prime Minister of Ukraine Denis Shmyhal said that the Ukrainian government does not plan to introduce mandatory vaccination against coronavirus in the country. He stated this during a press conference, the correspondent of UNN reports.
At the same time, Shmygal stressed that the authorities will motivate people to get vaccinated against the coronavirus. According to him, the government cannot introduce compulsory vaccination for a specific person, but can introduce compulsory vaccination for the collectives of educational institutions.
