Ukraine at end of decade can increase annual harvest to 130-150 mln tonnes – CEO of Kernel

KYIV. Nov 18 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Russian armed aggression against Ukraine and temporary occupation of part of its territories will lead to a reduction in the country’s harvest in 2023 to 65 million tonnes, which is 35% less than in 2021, when the country harvested over 100 million tonnes of crops.

At the same time, after the victory of Ukraine, the country can again increase the annual harvest to the level of 100 million tonnes within two to three years, and in another five years to reach 130-150 million tonnes/year, according to Yevhen Osipov, the general director of Kernel.

"Ukraine can produce 130-150 million tonnes of crops. We will reach the figure of 100 million, which we have already achieved in 2021, in about 2-3 years: the crisis will pass, and we will again reach 100 million tonnes. In five years we will reach 130-150 million tonnes, and here we simultaneously need to develop logistics channels and infrastructure for further exports, and at the same time we will need to build deeper agricultural processing in order to generate more added value and leave it inside the country," he said.

The CEO also stressed that next year is not the best time for the development of agricultural processing in Ukraine due to the shortage of agricultural raw materials in Ukraine, caused by a reduction in the harvest from 100 million tonnes to 65 million tonnes.

According to him, the development of the processing industry after the victory of Ukraine will begin with oilseeds: sunflower, soybeans, and rapeseeds. The next crops will be corn, followed by the rest, as well as agro-industrial products.

Before the war, Kernel ranked first in the world in the production of sunflower oil (about 7% of world production) and its export (about 12%), and was also the largest producer and seller of bottled sunflower oil in Ukraine. In addition, the company was engaged in the cultivation of other agricultural products and their sale.
