UK reduces imports from Russia to lowest level since records began, did not import fuel for first time
MOSCOW. Aug 24 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Imports of goods from Russia to the UK decreased to 33 million pounds sterling in June 2022 and are at the lowest level since records began in January 1997, the country’s Office for National Statistics said on Wednesday.
This is a decrease of 96.6% compared with the average monthly imports in the 12 months to February 2022.
Fuel imports fell to zero for the first time in June amid sanctions against Russia due to events in Ukraine, the report said. It had averaged 0.5 billion pounds sterling in the 12-month period before harsh sanctions were imposed.
Imports of non-ferrous metals totaled 6 million pounds sterling in June 2022, a decrease of 107 million pounds (94.7%) compared with the monthly average for the 12 months to February 2022. Import of steel and steel products, which were of a token volume even before, almost ceased altogether, totaling less than 1 million pounds in value terms.
Exports from the UK to Russia in June amounted to 83 million pounds, which is 67% less than the monthly average in the pre-sanctions year. The lion’s share of this figure (61.6 million pounds) is exports of chemical products, and this item includes medicines that are not subject to sanctions restrictions.
