KYIV. Oct 5 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The Ukrainian Grain Association (UGA) on October 1 joined the European association COCERAL to introduce European standards in the grain industry and expand trade with the EU, a membership will provide it with access to scientific, technical and regulatory information, as well as data and news about a situation in the EU market, according to the association’s website on Tuesday.
"Ukraine’s accession to the work of the European association COCERAL is a logical step for the implementation of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement in the agricultural sector. Such cooperation will allow UGA members to better understand the specifics of the EU policy and regulatory framework for improving trade with the EU countries and will help adapt the domestic regulatory framework to EU standards," the UGA said, citing its president Mykola Horbachev.
According to the agreements reached, UGA representatives will be able to participate in COCERAL working groups on biotechnology, organic group, crop forecasting, food and feed safety issues. Also, the association will have access to technical and regulatory information and COCERAL news about the situation in the EU market, statistics, data on legislation in the food industry, GMO technologies, biotechnology, organic agriculture and plant protection agents.
The UGA clarified that it will become the only specialized association from the Eastern European region represented in COCERAL, while not being a representative of an EU member state.
The association recalled that COCERAL was established in 1958 after the signing of the Treaty of Rome, which led to the creation of the European Economic Community. It brings together producers, traders, importers, exporters and port terminal operators working with grain, oilseeds, legumes, olive oil, oils and fats, feed and other agricultural crops.
The Ukrainian Grain Association (UGA) is an association of producers, processors and large exporters of grain, which annually export about 90% of Ukrainian grain products.
