U.S. pledges $60 mln in aid to Ukraine ahead of Biden's meeting with Zelensky – media

WASHINGTON. Aug 31 (Interfax) – The United States has pledged $60 million in military aid to Ukraine in response to "a sharp increase in Russian military activity along its border", ceasefire violations and provocations, the Associated Press reported on Tuesday.

"Russia’s construction along the Ukrainian border has shown a lack of capacity in the Ukrainian military’s ability to defend itself against a Russian incursion. Ukraine’s significant capacity gaps need to be addressed urgently to reinforce deterrence in the face of the current Russian threat," the notice of military assistance that the Biden administration sent to the U.S. Congress reads.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky is paying an official visit to the United States; he will be in Washington on August 31 and September 1. On September 1, he is scheduled to meet with U.S. President Joseph Biden.

In March of this year, the Pentagon announced military aid to Ukraine in the amount of $125 million, as well as the transfer of two patrol boats to Ukraine.
