U.S. involvement in resolving issues of de-occupation of Donbas, Crimea to be key topic of Ukraine-U.S. talks – Korniyenko

KYIV. Aug 30 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The key topic of the upcoming talks between the presidents of Ukraine and the United States, Volodymyr Zelensky and Joseph Biden, will be security and the involvement of the American side in resolving the issues of the de-occupation of Donbas and Crimea, said Oleksandr Korniyenko, chairman of the Servant of the People political party, first deputy head of the eponymous faction.

"Of course, the key topic will be the security situation, namely the ability of the United States to join the resolution of the issues of the de-occupation of Donbas and Crimea. At the same time, we are not begging for help, because we have something to offer to jointly counter Russian aggression: the Crimea platform and tangible progress in providing and reforming the army according to NATO standards. And we do not require the United States to do our work for us," Korniyenko said in a comment to the Interfax-Ukraine news agency.

Korniyenko also hopes that the talks will eliminate the risk of gas becoming an economic weapon for the Russian Federation against Ukraine in connection with the likely launch of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.

"Gas should not turn into an energy and economic weapon against Ukraine on the part of Russia. We hope that at the end of the summit we will find a way to eliminate this risk. Not all is lost in the Nord Stream 2 issue, and the president will consistently defend Ukraine’s national interests," said the head of the party.

He noted that support for reforms in Ukraine would be another topic of the talks. "This is not only about financial assistance, but also about investments and joint projects in some sectors. Business in the United States defers to the recommendations of the state, so we want to change the attitude towards Ukraine in the political and business circles of the United States from the negative, which was formed due to the actions of the old politicians, to the positive," said Korniyenko.

According to him, the visit of President Volodymyr Zelensky to the United States is a clear signal that the United States remains a partner and ally of Ukraine and continues to support its territorial integrity, as evidenced by the decision of U.S. President Joseph Biden to provide Ukraine with another tranche of military assistance.

"It is important that the presidents will negotiate, both in an expanded format and tete-a-tete. This opportunity is not provided to all leaders of states who visit the White House. Actually, this is a chance to convey our vision of the situation to President Biden," Korniyenko stressed.
