Turkey does not recognize Russian 'referendum' in Ukraine – Erdogan-Scholz meeting

KYIV. Sept 21 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that the Turkish side does not intend to recognize the so-called "referendum," which the Russian Federation is going to hold in the occupied territories of Ukraine, the Turkish edition Crimean News Agency (Ankara) reports on Tuesday, citing a statement by the official representative of the German federal government, Steffen Hebestreit.

"Turkey does not recognize the ‘referendums’ that Russia will hold on the occupied territory of Ukraine," Hebestrait said, commenting on the results of the meeting between Erdogan and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on the sidelines of the 77th General Assembly of the United Nations.

As reported on the website of the German Federal Government, during the meeting between Scholz and Erdogan, the situation in Ukraine as a result of the aggressive war of the Russian Federation was at the center of the discussion. "Both agreed that Russia should immediately cease hostilities and completely withdraw from the territory of Ukraine. In this context, the chancellor also made it clear that bogus referendums in territories illegally occupied by Russia are unacceptable and will not receive any recognition," the message says.
