Tkachenko does not attend meeting of Kyiv City Council considering issue of protecting cultural heritage of capital

KYIV. Aug 31 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Minister of Culture and Information Policy Oleksandr Tkachenko did not attend the meeting of the Kyiv City Council, which will consider the issue of protecting the cultural heritage of the capital.

As reported on the website of the Kyiv City Council, mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko, who had previously invited Tkachenko to the meeting, said that the inaction of the Ministry of Culture leads to the destruction of monuments.

"At today’s meeting in connection with the appeals of the Kyiv City Council deputies, we invited the Minister of Culture and Information Policy Oleksandr Tkachenko to hear information about the activities in the field of cultural heritage protection in the capital. At our invitation to come to the meeting, the Minister of Culture, answered through social networks, that, say, ‘you have picked the wrong battle’. And he will call Klitschko to his ministry. Well, this is somewhat uncivilized for the Minister of Culture. The deputies of the Kyiv City Council, whom, let me remind you, were elected by the people of Kyiv, want to listen to Oleksandr Tkachenko. And such a tone of communication is disrespectful for both the deputies and the residents of the city. Control yourself in some way, Mr. Minister," the mayor of the capital said.

Klitschko said that the Ministry of Culture "does not respond adequately" to the destruction of cultural monuments, despite the protests of society.

"Monuments, being privately owned or leased, are destroyed or destroyed by their owners. The community protests. The community protests, but the Ministry of Culture and the police do not adequately react to this," Klitschko said.

The leader of UDAR said also that in the last three years and the first half of this year, the capital’s authorities sent 35 submissions to the Ministry of Culture. They say that 1,542 monuments and identified objects of cultural heritage should be put into the State Register of Immovable Monuments of Ukraine. During April 2021, the Department received orders from the Ministry for 2018-2021 on the inclusion of 73 objects of cultural heritage in the State Register of Immovable Monuments of Ukraine. As noted in the Kyiv City Council, 1,469 objects have not yet been included in the State Register.
