Thirty-one countries vote to restrict participation of Russia, Belarus in Lisbon Recognition Convention Committee

KYIV. Feb 28 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Thirty-one countries backed the proposal to restrict the participation of Russia and Belarus in the Lisbon Recognition Convention Committee agencies, the Education and Science Ministry of Ukraine has said.

“On February 28, 2023, a delegation of the Education and Science Ministry of Ukraine attended an extraordinary meeting of the Committee of the Convention on the Recognition of Qualifications concerning Higher Education in the European Region (Lisbon Recognition Convention Committee) during which 31 member states of the Lisbon Convention approved a declaration in support for Ukraine,” it said.

In particular, Albania, Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Malta, Great Britain, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Spain, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, San Marino, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland, and Ukraine voted in favor of the proposal to restrict participation of Russia and Belarus representatives in the meetings and other activities of the Committee as well as its governing and collegiate bodies.

“Considering the fact that the preamble of the Lisbon Convention defines the important role of higher education in promoting peace, mutual understanding and tolerance, in building mutual trust between peoples and countries, the meeting participants once again emphasized that aggressor countries have no place “at the same desk” with the civilized world,” the ministry quoted Education and Science Minister of Ukraine Serhiy Shkarlet as saying.
