There is wish to hold Normandy-format summit as soon as possible, but it needs to be prepared – Peskov

MOSCOW. Sept 28 (Interfax) – It would be good to hold a Normandy-format summit before Angela Merkel stops being the German federal chancellor, but there is a risk that may not happen, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

"Yes, there is such a risk; everyone wants to hold it as soon as possible and, in principle, it is crystal clear what should be done for that. Our vis-a-vis in Kyiv seem to be the best aware but, regretfully, they are unwilling to do so," Peskov told reporters on Tuesday in response to a question whether Kyiv would like to hold the summit before Merkel’s term of office ends and whether there was a risk that might not happen.

"Indeed, we know that various sides, not just Kyiv, have expressed the wish and, indeed, that would be good. But there is one important if. As we have said before, it would be pointless to hold the summit for its own sake, it needs to be well prepared, especially given the acute deficit of results in the fulfillment of earlier agreements," Peskov said.

The foreign ministries and political advisors of the four countries are preparing for the possible summit and reviewing the current state of affairs, Peskov said.

"We cannot boast any particular results so far," he said.

Andriy Yermak, chief of staff of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, said earlier that Ukraine was working to organize a Normandy-format summit on a settlement in Donbas before the term of office of German Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel expires.
