Tbilisi mayoral election winner Kakha Kaladze urges all residents to unite

TBILISI. Nov 1 (Interfax) – Kakha Kaladze, the Tbilisi mayor re-elected for the post on Saturday, who represents the ruling Georgian Dream party, attended a press briefing on Sunday to thank all those who supported him at the second round of the Georgian local elections.

"I want to address my [dear] Tbilisi residents. I will be the mayor of all the residents of this city, a defender of the interests of Tbilisi and Georgia. I am sure that with these elections, we will definitively put an end to [the period of] destruction, enmity with each other, hate and revanchism in Georgian politics," Kaladze said.

He urged all citizens to unite for building a better future for Tbilisi and Georgia, despite differences in political views.

Formerly a well-known soccer player, Kaladze has been the mayor of Tbilisi since November 13, 2017.

According to preliminary figures released by the Georgian Central Elections Commission, Kaladze has won 55.6% of the vote in the second round of the mayoral election. The candidate of the opposition United National Movement party Nika Melia has garnered 44.5%.

The Georgian opposition is refusing to recognize the results of the second round of the local elections, saying that they have been rigged by the authorities.
