Tbilisi court trying Saakashvili for illegally crossing border, he isn't present in courtroom

TBILISI. Dec 9 (Interfax) – The Tbilisi City Court has started the trial of former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili in a case in which he has been charged with illegally crossing the border.

Saakashvili, who is receiving recuperative medical treatment at a military hospital in Gori, refused to be present in the courtroom, citing health problems.

Before the start of the proceedings, prosecutor Levan Vepkhvadze told journalists that the investigation has proven that Saakashvili illegally crossed Georgia’s border, thus committing a crime.

"As concerns the route of his movements, the investigation has determined it in detail, including who helped him in Ukraine. This was a high-ranking security official under the previous government," Vepkhvadze said.

It was reported earlier that four Georgian citizens have been detained for helping Saakashvili illegally cross the border.

Saakashvili secretly arrived in Georgia on September 29. He was detained in Tbilisi on October 1, after which he was placed in a prison in Rustavi, where he declared a hunger strike.
