Tbilisi City Court arrests man in whose apartment Saakashvili was hiding
TBILISI. Oct 4 (Interfax) – The Tbilisi City Court on Mond has arrested Georgian citizen Elgudzhe Tsomaya, in whose apartment former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, who was on the wanted list, was hiding and who was detained in Tbilisi on October 1.
Georgian prosecutors charged Tsomaya with the concealment of a grave crime.
The detainee is facing one to four years in prison if convicted of the charges.
Prosecutors told reporters that the detainee may also be charged with the illegal transportation of migrants over the state border and the creation of relevant conditions for that.
Meanwhile, Tsomaya’s lawyer Beka Basilaya, who is also defending Saakashvili, has called the accusations absurd.
Saakashvili was detained in Tbilisi on October 1. He is now in prison in Rustavi.
Saakashvili has been implicated in several criminal cases in Georgia. The Georgian authorities repeatedly said he would be detained immediately after crossing the border.
