Swedish PM announces supply of Archer howitzers to Ukraine – media
KYIV. Jan 19 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Sweden is preparing to send 155mm Archer self-propelled artillery mounts, infantry fighting vehicles and anti-tank systems to Ukraine as part of a defense support package, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has said.
According to the Swedish edition of Expressen on Thursday, the government announced this at a press conference, where it presented a package of support for Ukraine, consisting of three parts. In addition to Kristersson, the press conference was attended by Swedish Defense Minister Paul Jonsson, Energy and Industry Minister Ebba Busch and Labor Market and Integration Minister Johan Pehrson.
According to Jonsson, the expected effect of this package is to better equip Ukraine for ground combat. According to him, the government hopes that the equipment of artillery systems and training will be carried out within a couple of months. The minister said Archer would be a good addition to the systems that already exist in Ukraine.
The publication said Archer has long been on the wish list of Ukraine, but Sweden has so far refrained from transferring them.
At the same time that Kristersson was still in opposition last year, he criticized the government’s decision not to send Archer to Ukraine. When he became prime minister, during the national conference "People and Defense" he said Archer could end up in Ukraine, and there was no question of a "reversal" on his part. Now the government is providing increased support to Ukraine, the newspaper said.
The total cost of assistance will be about $419 million. The authorities did not specify how much of the ACS should go to Ukraine. Sweden currently has 48 Archers.
