"The court determined the verdict of Obolonsky District Court of Kyiv dated January 24, 2019 and the ruling of the Court of Appeal dated October 2, 2020 regarding Viktor Yanukovych should be upheld, and the cassation complaints […] were not sustained," the court said in the ruling.

Earlier, at a meeting on Monday, the Supreme Court refused to challenge the former president’s attorneys, while the interests of Yanukovych were represented by a government attorneys.

Yanukovych’s attorney Vitaliy Serdiuk said that Yanukovych had withdrawn his defenders from participating in the consideration of cassations against the court verdict in a high treason case.

"Viktor Yanukovych today withdrew his attorneys from participating in the proceedings in the Supreme Court due to the impossibility of ensuring his right to defense. Under the conditions created by the Supreme Court, we cannot provide our client with a full-fledged right to defense. Therefore, he decided to withdraw Serdiuk, Ihor Fedorenko, Andriana Fozekosh, Bohdan Bilenko, Oleksandr Horoshynsky and Oleksandr Baidyk from participating in the case of the loss of Crimea," Serdiuk said on his Facebook page.

The attorney said that throughout the entire process the defense intended to organize Yanukovych’s participation in court hearings in the order of international legal assistance.

"Thus, in view of our lack of opportunity to ensure the right to defense, the client withdraws us from participation in the case of the loss of Crimea and instructs us to focus on work in international institutions, including before the ECHR, as well as on cases related to the events on Maidan," Serdiuk said.
