Su-24 bomber crashes in Perm territory, 2 pilots eject – Central Military District
MOSCOW. Aug 27 (Interfax) – A Sukhoi Su-24 bomber has crashed in the Perm territory, and both of its pilots ejected and are being searched for, Russia’s Central Military District said on Friday.
"A Su-24 crashed 95 kilometers west of the city of Perm on August 27, while on its way to an aircraft maintenance facility to undergo planned repairs. According to the report from the scene, the pilots ejected," it said.
A search and rescue service helicopter has been dispatched to evacuate the pilots from their landing site, it said.
"The flight was carried out without ordnance. The plane fell in a forested area. There is no destruction on the ground," it said.
The Su-24 (NATO reporting name: Fencer) is a frontline bomber designed by the Sukhoi Design Bureau (part of the United Aircraft Corporation, or UAC). The plane is intended for delivering targeted missile and bomb strikes in favorable and complicated weather conditions, at any time of the day, including at low altitudes, upon ground and water surface targets. The plane was commissioned in 1975, and about 1,400 such planes have been manufactured. At present, the Russian Aerospace Forces operate its comprehensively modernized version, the Su-24M2. Its crew consists of two people.
