Stoltenberg: We see signs that China may be planning to supply weapons to Russia – this shouldn’t happen
BRUSSELS. Feb 25 (Interfax-Ukraine) – NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg says there are signs of possible planning by China to supply Russia with lethal weapons to wage war with Ukrain, which shouldn’t happen.
“We are monitoring closely what China is doing. And we have seen signs they may be considering and planning to send lethal aid to Russia. This will be a very big mistake. This is very serious and that’s also why the United States and other Allies have conveyed so clearly that this should not happen,” he said at a joint press conference with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas in Tallinn on Friday.
At the same time, the Secretary General stated that the alliance today “have not seen any actual delivery of lethal aid.” Stoltenberg again urged Beijing not to supply Russia with military aid, as “that will be to support an illegal war of aggression.” “China is a member of the UN Security Council and they have a particular responsibility to protect the UN Charter and this is a war of aggression violating exactly that charter,” Stoltenberg said.
At the request of journalists, the NATO Secretary General also addressed Moscow: “President Putin started this war, President Putin can end this war today by withdrawing his forces, if he doesn’t do that, we will stand by Ukraine for as long as it takes. And Allies have provided unprecedented level of military support to Ukraine. And because this is about Ukraine, it will be a tragedy if President Putin wins, for the Ukrainians, but it will be dangerous for all of us. And therefore, this is in our own security interest to ensure that Ukraine prevails.”
In turn, President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that Ukraine is fighting not only for its independence and territorial integrity, but also for universal values. According to her, these are the values of peace, respect for international law, respect for the UN Charter. She added that Ukraine is fighting not only for its independence, but also for theirs. She stated that the EU would stand with Ukraine for as long as it takes. Von der Leyen said that they had demonstrated unity and commitment over these past 12 months, and President Putin can have no doubt that their commitment and unity to stand with Ukraine will be doubled.
