Stoltenberg: No changes in Russia's nuclear forces, cancellation of NATO's nuclear deterrence exercise planned long before Russia's invasion of Ukraine would be mistake
BRUSSELS. Oct 11 (Interfax-Ukraine) – NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has said that no changes could be seen in Russia’s nuclear forces and that it would be a mistake to cancel NATO’s nuclear deterrence exercise that was planned long ago before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
He said this at a press conference ahead of the meetings of NATO Defense Ministers due in Brussels on October 12-13.
"President Putin’s veiled nuclear threats are dangerous and irresponsible. Russia knows that a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought. We are closely monitoring Russia’s nuclear forces. We have not seen any changes in Russia’s posture. But we remain vigilant," Stoltenberg said.
He also said that NATO will hold its long-planned deterrence exercise, Steadfast Noon, next week.
This is routine training, which was planned long before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Stoltenberg said, adding that it would be a mistake if this training was cancelled because of the war in Ukraine. That would give an absolutely wrong signal – NATO is predictable and this is the best way to prevent escalation, he said.
NATO is ready for any threats and attacks against the Allies, the Secretary General said.
