Sternenko files cassation appeal against verdict rendered by Odesa Court of Appeal

KYIV. Aug 27 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Activist Serhiy Sternenko, who received a one year suspended sentence under the article on illegal handling of weapons, filed a cassation appeal against the verdict of Odesa Court of Appeal.

Sternenko himself made the corresponding statement on his Telegram channel on Friday.

"I have filed a cassation appeal with the Supreme Court against the verdict of Odesa Court of Appeal, which gave me three years of imprisonment with one year suspended sentence for one non-existent patron," the message says.

As reported, on February 23, 2021, Prymorsky District Court of Odesa sentenced Sternenko to seven years in prison, finding him guilty of kidnapping Scherbych. In addition, according to the court decision, half of all property belonging to him was seized from the activist. After the announcement of Sternenko’s verdict, protest actions were held in Kyiv in support of the activist.

On March 5, activist and blogger Sternenko, sentenced to seven years in prison in the case of the kidnapping of deputy of Lyman village council Serhiy Scherbych, appealed the court verdict.

Later, Odesa Court of Appeal changed the measure of restraint from custody to round-the-clock house arrest for Sternenko and Demchuk in the case of the abduction of Serhiy Scherbych, deputy of Kominternivsky district council of Odesa region.

On May 31, Odesa-based Court of Appeals dropped the charges against activist Serhiy Sternenko under the article of assault related to robbery against deputy of Lyman village council Serhiy Scherbych, and imposed a suspended sentence under the article on illegal handling of weapons.
