Stefanchuk signs law on military chaplains

KYIV. Dec 7 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Ruslan Stefanchuk has signed the law "On the service of military chaplaincy."

"Today I have signed very important law ‘On the service of military chaplaincy.’ I believe that this document is an important step towards the formation of a modern Ukrainian army, taking care of its defenders," Stefanchuk wrote on Facebook on Tuesday.

According to him, the law is the answer to a spiritual request. "By introducing the Military Chaplaincy Service, we express our support for our volunteer clergy, who have been on the front line from the first days until today. This is important for reforming our army on the way to NATO membership. This is important for Ukraine!" the speaker stressed.

As reported, the Verkhovna Rada adopted this bill on November 30.

The military chaplaincy service is formed as a separate structure within the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the National Guard, other military formations formed in accordance with the laws of Ukraine, the State Border Guard Service.

According to the law, a military chaplain can be a citizen of Ukraine who is a clergyman of a religious organization registered in Ukraine and who has received a mandate from its leading center (administration) to carry out military chaplaincy activities.

Most of the provisions of this law come into force on July 1, 2022, except for the second part of Article 7 (a mandatory requirement for the position of a military chaplain is a higher theological education). This regulation will come into effect five years after the law comes into force.
