Stefanchuk calls on Congress of Judges' delegates to elect members of Supreme Court of Justice according to their quota

KYIV. Jan 11 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Ruslan Stefanchuk called on the delegates of the 19th Congress of Judges to elect eight members of the High Council of Justice (HJC) according to their quota, so that this state body would begin its work.

According to the Verkhovna Rada website, the chairman said it is the Supreme Court of Justice that introduces the appointment of judges, brings them to disciplinary responsibility and dismisses them, gives consent to detention or detention. In addition, based on the results of the reform, the Supreme Court of Justice will also have to form a new composition of the High Qualifications Commission of Judges of Ukraine, which is responsible for staffing the entire judicial branch of government.

"That is why the formation of the High Council of Justice according to the new rules is one of the conditions for the implementation of the recommendations provided to Ukraine with the status of a candidate for EU membership, and an important component of opening negotiations on EU accession. At the same time, the launch of the High Council of Justice is also a requirement of every Ukrainian, since only a judiciary that operates on the basis of independence, responsibility and accountability will be able to satisfy the society’s demand for justice and the establishment of the rule of law," Stefanchuk said.

The Head of the Parliament said the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine completed its part of the work in the summer by electing two members of the High Council of Justice.

"In the spring, we expect a report from the European Commission on the implementation of seven recommendations by Ukraine. We need an excellent rating! And for this, Ukraine must demonstrate the coordinated work of all state bodies and institutions," the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada said.

Extraordinary 19th Congress of Judges is held on January 11 to 13 in Kyiv.
